Your mobile is to blame for having less sex

The technology evolves very fast and every day we spend more time in front of mobile phones, computers and tablets. In fact, to this day there are few people able to leave the house without the telephone. So essential is it?

Currently the bars and restaurants are full of groups of people (many times, young people) that once they are sitting at the table they don’t even look at each other. They are too busy looking at the screen of their mobile.

And that’s not all. The telephone has also become too important inside the house. Now, we talk less and prefer to have a good time watching Instagram and Facebook before having a good time watching a movie with our partner. It even seems that we care more about what others do than what we do.

Mobile takes time away from relationships

A study conducted with 34,000 people living in the United Kingdom has shown quite disturbing results. This study called Natsal (National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles) wanted to investigate what the sexual consequences of excessive mobile use were.

The results of the research show a drop in sexual relations between 2001 and 2012. This is more accentuated in men and women over 25 years and in those who have been living together for a long time.

There are two key moments in this fall. First we have the launch of the iPhone in 2007 and then the global crisis that began in 2008. The fact that one of the two turning points was the market launch of a new mobile, has led Kaye Wellings (one of those in charge of the investigation) to name the telephone as one of the causes of this decrease.

Telephones take us away from our partner

Wellings affirms that the mobile phone has erased a lot the line that separates our public life from our private life. The problem is that we get home and we do not take off from these devices; we continue using them. This causes us to pay less attention to our partner and our sexual relationships.

And well, the proof is in the results of this investigation in which 34,000 people have participated:

  • Less than half of people have sex at least once a week.
  • The percentage of women who have sex more than 10 times a month has decreased from 20.6% in 2001 to 13.2% in 2012.
  • The percentage of men who have sex more than 10 times a month has decreased from 20.2% in 2001 to 14.4% in 2012.
  • 64% of men interviewed and 51% of women say they would like to have sex more frequently.

What do you think about this results? It is really quite worrying, because although in this case it is centered in the United Kingdom, the results are similar in many other countries. We may need to reconsider and realize what we are missing.
