Censorship is something that is normal in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Everything that is controversial for the government of the country is blocked. Well, this time it has affected the Wikipedia website.
The government censors Wikipedia
In 2015, the Ministry of Public Security censored the Chinese version of this website. And this week, specifically on Wednesday May 15, the Wikipedia Foundation reported a total censorship of the page from China since April 2019. Thus, the website is already completely inaccessible in all languages.
China also has blocked social networks
Some time ago, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook social networks were also censored by the government. In fact, they have offered alternative networks to those censored: QQ, Weibo and WeChat.
In addition, the Google search engine was also blocked because it did not want to follow censorship norms.
Important political events are approaching
This total censorship of Wikipedia is believed to be because this year marks 30 years since the protests and since the massacres in Tiananmen Square. In 1989, 10,000 people were killed in Beijing demanding the democratic opening of the communist regime. On the other hand, this 2019 also marks the 100th anniversary of another student demand. In this they complained about the abuses of foreign power and how weak the government of the country was. This, ended with a lot of blood and a lot of repression.
So, it seems that the Chinese government to avoid controversy has decided to block everything that can generate it. Who knows how far his censorship can go.
